The current pandemic is a new and unprecedented event impacting everyone across the lifespan. However, children and youth are particularly at-risk for anxiety because this is a new experience for them and their parents. Although children and youth may have been exposed to other tragic events, COVID-19 is uncharted territory across the globe. It is crucially important to attend to the needs of our children in a healthy and supportive manner in order to help foster their resilience.
In Part I: What We Say and How We Say it Matters, we will review the human stress response as it applies to COVID-19 and offer strategies and tips on how to communicate with children and youth. The manner in which caregivers communicate with children and youth during this time can go a long way to building resilience and has the potential to help them cope better during the crisis.
We have also included a resource document containing helpful online tools to further help caregivers and children.
