Substance use is incredibly common. As providers in the mental health field, however, we often see substance use when it becomes problematic and contributes to a client's presenting problem. We may feel compelled to help alleviate our client's struggles, and doing this in a gentle and collaborative way may be most effective. Since its inception,
Motivational Interviewing (MI) has gained recognition as an effective and evidence-based technique that can be used broadly, but was originally developed for use with individuals with problematic substance use. Therefore, this webinar will focus on practice updates from MI 2 to MI 3, specifically related to the Spirit of MI and target behaviors, and how to implement techniques within clinical practice. Case vignettes related to substance abuse will be discussed in order to clarify and illustrate the effectiveness of the updated MI techniques.
